On 11 June 2026, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) published revised Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2.0, a voluntary net-zero guidance used by companies to set GHG reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping the planet’s warming to 1.5°C. We discuss the implications for corporate biomethane demand.
Among the changes introduced compared to the previous standard are company categorisation based on size and geography, implementation hierarchy where physical emission reductions are prioritised over market instruments, separate Scope 1 and 2 GHG reduction targets, deliverability as well as additionality criteria.
With regards to the timeline, Version 2.0 is relevant for companies preparing to renew existing targets in 2027, and those planning to submit targets from Q1 2027. Companies that plan on setting, updating, or renewing targets in 2026 can rely on the previous version of the standard (V1.3.1). Version 1.3.1 can be applied for target-setting until January 2028. Companies with existing targets set for 2030 or later should transition to the V2.0 framework for the next cycle (2030-2035), setting new targets from 2028.
