Anders Nordeng
Senior Analyst - EU Carbon
LinkedInAs a senior carbon market analyst at Veyt, I actively monitor and analyse policy processes that inform and impact the European carbon market. A key part of my job is to test and question the supply and demand assumptions that go into our models to ensure that the output – our balance and price predictions are as robust as possible.
I use my experience and knowledge built up over 15 years to inform Veyt’s long-term forecasting on carbon prices. I follow events in Brussels closely, keeping an eye on key legislative files as they pass through the lawmakers (the European Parliament and the member states in the Council), and I touch base with contacts to continuously adjust and reassess the assumptions that go into our models.
By training, I am a political scientist, and I wrote my Master's thesis at the College of Europe (Warsaw, Poland) on the European gas market as it was being liberalised. I did a brief stint as a trainee in the European Commission’s energy department, before spending four years at the French Embassy in Norway in the trade section, facilitating business contacts between the two countries. I then moved to a small consultancy organisation, Mandag Morgen, which was set up to bring together government and other experts to discuss and troubleshoot climate-related issues. Throughout that process, emissions trading kept coming up as a tangible solution to emissions reduction. I was tasked with researching the credibility of carbon markets setting prices on emissions, and gauging which technology or policies might be best.
This led me to joining Point Carbon, where I covered both mandatory and voluntary carbon markets and realised the immense difference between the two. From 2012 to 2016,I was the editor of Carbon Market Monitor, a monthly publication that provided clients with an overview of market and policy developments in all major carbon markets—EU ETS, The Western Climate Initiative (WCI), The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), The Korean ETS (KETS),and the Chinese carbon pilots.
Throughout my career,I have had the privilege of watching emission markets develop and become more significant. As a result of my time covering the market for multiple companies (Thomson Reuters, Refinitiv, and the London Stock Exchange), and from multiple perspectives, I now find myself in a position where I have a comprehensive overview of carbon markets as they develop globally.
Away from my desk, I enjoy speaking French, long-distance running, and reading history. I live in Oslo.
