EU Legislators Position GOs for Green Hydrogen and E-Fuel Markets

The European Parliament proposed on 14 September 2022 amendments to the Renewable Energy Directive. The amendments challenge the Commission’s proposals on how to count fuels as renewable when using electricity as feedstock, also known as renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs). The Parliament suggests making it easier to qualify fuels as RFNBOs when taking electricity from the grid. We examine how the legislators position GOs for this renewable electricity (RES-E) to RFNBO (also known as ‘Renewable-Grid’)pathway, and we examine what it could mean for the GO market.
