Commission aims for binding 2040 target in 2025

On 6 February the European Commission presented a communication suggesting a 90% emission reduction target for 2040, which it hopes lawmakers will endorse as soon as possible so that it can follow up with a legislative proposal to insert the target into the Climate Law before the 2025 climate summit in Brazil. Many member states have yet to reveal their take on the proposed target and the European Parliament’s position will not be clear until after the elections. Despite positive initial reactions, it is still too early to say if the proposed target and timeline will hold.
