As Europe pushes for faster renewables deployment in a bid to enhance its energy security amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Member States need to respond swiftly to ensure that EU’s ambition becomes a reality. Following Commission’s Recommendation (as part of REPowerEU plan) to tackle slow and complex permitting for major renewable projects, some EU MS started drafting up bills to accelerate clean energy uptake. Kicking off with France, in September, President Macron unveiled a new bill aiming to get rid of red tape for renewable projects, allowing to increase solar and wind capacity by 154 GW by 2050 (vs. 10 GW of solar, 16 GW onshore and no offshore wind in 2020). While the bill awaits debate in the Senate this autumn, we publish an analysis ahead of the vote.
