Maritime ETS: Fuel cost could jump 50%

The inclusion of maritime emissions in the EU ETS means that shipping companies will face a substantial extra cost. From 2026 onwards, shipowners and operators will need to account for all emissions, which means approximately 3.2 allowance units (EUAs) per tonne of bunker oil. Assuming a price of €90/t, that means an extra €285 or $310 per tonne of fuel, or roughly half the existing fuel cost.
