Tuesday 06 October | 14:00 CEST | 60 minutes
ETS2 auctioning begins in January 2027, a year before the system starts operationally. These early auctions are intended to create liquidity and establish a credible price signal ahead of the first compliance year.
For the first time, ETS2 auctions will also fall under the EU ETS Common Auction Platform mandate. EEX, which has operated the platform since 2013, has been re-appointed under the successor contract CAP4, ensuring continuity of the established auction setup.
On 06 October, André Tzschoppe and Steffen Loebner, from EEX, and Florian Baier from Veyt will bring together the operational and analytical perspectives on the launch of ETS2 auctions: how the auctions will work, how market participants can access them, and what early auctioning could mean for supply, liquidity, and prices.
What we will cover
- Auction design, operational processes, and applicable rules
- Direct and indirect access options, and the prerequisites for market participation
- Timing and key details of the auction calendar
- Secondary market design and hedging opportunities
- The current state of the ETS2 futures market, and why liquidity has stayed thin
- Early auction volumes and national transposition as the gating factor
