Commission proposes 46 % electrification target by 2040

The European Commission presented a non-legislative Electrification Action Plan on 17 July 2026, initially announced in the AccelerateEU package in response to the energy crisis and as part of the Clean Industrial Deal. An EU-wide indicative electrification target of 46 % of final energy consumption by 2040 is proposed, as part of a plan to decarbonise transport, buildings and industries. For a decade, EU’s electrification rate has remained stagnant at 23 %.
