The SBTi Guidance for the Maritime Transport Sector

On 6 December 2022, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) launched the world’s first framework that enables shipping companies to set near- and long-term science-based emission reduction targets in line with Paris 1.5 degrees and net-zero emission pathways. With support from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Smart Freight Centre, and UMAS International Ltd , a maritime consultancy focusing on carbon-constrained solutions, the SBTi provides guidance to measure carbon intensity for users and providers of marine transportation services. With the maritime sector being the backbone of international trade, it currently accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually, which would make it the 6th largest emitter if it were a country.
