The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) came into force on 1 October 2023. Through the transition period (2023-2025), importers of iron & steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and electricity are required to report on their emissions. From 2026, these importers will be required to purchase and surrender certificates corresponding to their total emissions, less the share dictated by the phase-in schedule. As a first-of-its kind legislation, there are several issues to be resolved but the process is well underway.
