German 2030 solar target out of reach despite accelerated capacity growth

Germany reached close to 12 GW of new solar capacity additions in the first ten months of 2023 – a new record. The country is also on track to achieve its 2023 target for awarded solar capacity via auctions after another oversubscribed session signaled continued strong investment interest.

The government is trying to accelerate solar growth further by implementing its flagship Solar Package I. However, lobby groups say this cannot secure the doubling of the pace of targeted solar capacity build-out over the next three years unless there is additional financial support provided for the solar manufacturing industry.
