The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has just voted to approve the EPP, Greens, Renew, and S&D compromise agreement on the EU’s Climate Law amendment setting an emission reduction target for 2040.
The ENVI committee’s compromise agreement aligned the Parliament’s tentative position with that put forward in the Council’s recently approved general approach. For more on the content of ENVI’s compromise agreement, see our analysis from earlier today.
The vote on the compromise agreement tabled by EPP, Renew, Greens, and S&D saw 49 votes in favor, 33 opposed, and 6 abstentions.
The vote split mainly along party lines, with S&D, Renew, and Greens voting for, and ECR, ESN, and PfE voting against. The EPP vote was split, with 15 party MEPs voting for the text and 9 voting against.
The EPP split will likely continue in plenary voting. Assuming The Left, S&D, Greens, and Renew vote in favor of the text, 49 members of EPP will be required to reach the majority needed for the compromise to become the official position of the European Parliament (361 out of 720 MEPs).
