Bulgaria’s renewable expansion at risk amid legislative delays

Lack of planning, grid bottlenecks and delays in the adoption of various energy-related laws are threatening Bulgaria’s renewables expansion. Furthermore, the country may miss the deadline for submitting its revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) by the end of June amid recent political upheaval.

If the issues remain unresolved, the country may become an electricity importer, while local industrial consumers may revert to importing guarantees of origin (GOs) as part of their decarbonisation efforts.
